Spelling can be difficult for many first graders. Is your little
first grader having a hardtime with spelling? If so, read on for some
tips explaining how to help them.
Steps
- Writing the words, say 5 times each, often helps people memorize the words and their spellings. You could make this more fun by using different color crayons, markers, etc. for each word.
- Let him/her put each word in a sentence. If he/she knows and understands what the word means, it could help him/her remember the spelling.
- Give him/her a word and let them spell it using letter magnets or cut-out letters.
- Have a spelling bee! Once he/she knows the words for the most part. Randomly pick a word from the list and make him/her spell it aloud. You could even have a few friends/siblings join in!
- Give a practice spelling test. Make him/her sit down with a sheet of paper (just like in the classroom) and call out the words. Just as if they were taking the real test.
- Grade the test (from previous step). See if he/she is making common mistakes or keeps missing the same word(s).
- Continue practicing with him/her until they know the words backwards and forewards.
- (Perfect) practice makes perfect.
